Tips for Comparing Critical Illness Insurance Plans: Common Questions for Choosing a Critical Illness Insurance Plan in Hong Kong

What is cancer insurance?

icon
Cancer insurance plan is a type of critical illness insurance, under which the insured will receive a lump sum payment or reimbursement on the actual medical expenses when any covered cancer is unfortunately diagnosed. Blue’s cancer insurance plans provide a lump sum payment, which has no restriction on how to use the payment, and the insured may use it for the purposes other than hospitalization and medical treatment arising from the critical illness.

What is the waiting period?

icon
The waiting period of a critical illness insurance plan refers to the period after the policy takes effect, during which the insurer will not provide the benefits even if the insured is diagnosed with a covered illness. The waiting period for a critical illness benefits ranges from 90 days to 180 days in general, while that of Blue is 60 days for all of its critical illness plans.

Can I apply for critical illness insurance after getting cancer?

icon
In general, a critical illness plan will automatically terminate after the insured is diagnosed and receives the lump sum payment. If a patient wants to re-enroll in a critical illness plan after recovery, some insurers will reject the application by taking into account the relevant medical record, while some offer special protection plans targeting high-risk individuals for recurrence of critical illnesses.

Should I apply for a pure critical illness plan or a lifelong critical illness plan with savings benefit?

icon
Critical illness insurance is generally divided into lifelong plans with savings and pure critical illness plans without savings. For those with savings, the premium is higher since part of it will be reserved for savings purpose, and the coverage is lifelong. The premium of pure critical illness plans will be solely used for the coverage and is therefore lower, while protection period varies among different available plans.

How much coverage do I need for my critical illness plan?

icon
In general, it is recommended to have a critical illness coverage which is 2 to 3 times of the annual salary of the insured, because the treatment and recovery period for critical illnesses such as heart attack, stroke and cancer takes 2 to 3 years. Critical illness benefits should be enough to cover the daily expenses during the period.
